Born in Paris, Jean-Marie Collot d'Herbois was an actor and writer of comedies, as well as the author of the Almanach du père Gérard (1791), considered, at the time of the revolution of 1789, to be the best patriotic almanac of the jacobin club. He joined the insurrectionist Commune of Paris after August 10, 1792, and took part in the September Massacres (1792). A montagnard deputy to the Convention and a collaborator with the Committee of Public Safety in September 1793, he was concerned mostly with domestic issues. An organizer and supporter of the terror, with Joseph fouché he directed the suppression of the royalist federalist uprising in lyon (November 1793). Opposed, however, to maximi-lien Robespierre, he contributed, as president of the Convention, to his downfall. Nonetheless, Collot d'Herbois was deported in April 1795 (after the Days of 12 and 13 Germinal Year III), with several other Montagnard deputies to Guyana, where he eventually died.
